Memorial of St Gregory the Great – 3^rd September 2026 – 1Cor 3:18-23 and Luke 5:1-11

“You’ve got to become a fool to see the floodgates open!”

True wisdom begins when we stop trying to impress the world with our credentials and start trusting the upside-down logic of the Kingdom. In ancient Corinth, believers were fractured by ego, carving themselves into factions to boast about which superstar leader they followed. The Apostle Paul cuts straight through this intellectual arrogance, warning us that the sophisticated strategies, trends, and self-reliance of our current culture are complete foolishness in the eyes of God. To experience divine breakthrough, we must dare to look “foolish” to a world obsessed with control, willingly laying down our human pride so that God can fill us with a wisdom that never runs dry.

In the text of today Paul says, “If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become ‘fools’ so that you may become wise.” He’s saying that the logic of this world is complete foolishness to God. God doesn’t need your strategy; He needs your surrender. And if you want to know what that looks like in real time, you’ve got to walk down to the edge of the Lake of Gennesaret in Luke 5.

Simon Peter is standing on the shore. He’s exhausted. He’s got calluses on his hands and an empty boat behind him. He has fished all night long, the prime time for fishing, and has caught absolutely nothing! He is the expert in this environment. He knows the tides, he knows the nets, and he knows the water.

Then Jesus, a carpenter who spends His time working with wood, not water, steps into the boat, looks at the professional fisherman, and gives an instruction that makes zero sense. He says, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

Can you feel the tension in the room? Human wisdom says: “Jesus, the sun is up. The fish have gone deep. We’ve worked ourselves to the bone and there is nothing out there.” Worldly logic says to pack up the nets, go home, and try again tomorrow.

But Peter does something that makes him look like an absolute fool to every other fisherman on that shore. He drops his pride, overrides his expertise, and declares: “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” “BUT BECAUSE YOU SAY SO!”

That is the shift point! That is the moment you trade the wisdom of this age for the wisdom of the Kingdom. Peter had to become a “fool” to his own experience to receive the blessing that was already waiting for him in the deep water.

And what happens when you act on a word that makes you look foolish to the world? The Bible says they caught such a massive number of fish that their nets began to break! They had to call for backup because the provision was overwhelming! Paul explains the mystery of this miracle in 1 Corinthians 3:21-22 when he says, “All things are yours… whether the world or life or death or the present or the future, all are yours, and you are of Christ.”

The fish didn’t just suddenly appear because Jesus performed a magic trick. The fish were already theirs! Jesus just needed Peter to get his ego out of the driver’s seat so he could steer the boat to where the blessing was already stationed!

When you completely surrender your ego to Christ, you realize you don’t need to hustle for status because everything you need is already yours. Paul completely flips our worldly view of ownership on its head: instead of us belonging to the systems, teachers, or anxieties of this world, he declares that all things are yours. Leaders, life, death, the present, and the future have no power over you; they are merely servants to God’s greater purpose for your life. You no longer have to build your identity on human validation or material success, because your ultimate security is locked into a divine chain of custody: you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

Stop trying to figure out God’s next move with your human blueprints. Stop letting your past disappointment tell you what’s possible in your future. If you keep fishing in the shallow waters of your own understanding, you’re going to keep coming up empty. It’s time to let go of your expertise, embrace the holy foolishness of obedience, and push out into the deep!
